Since its launch in 2008, the International Antiques Fair (IAF) has established itself as one of the most prominent art events in Asia, which is an accomplishment I always take a lot of pride in. Owing to the support of various parties, IAF 2019 continues to raise the bar with a robust roster of local and global exhibitors, the best selection of artworks and a premier line-up of public events. In spite of our strenuous endeavors to promote antique knowledge and facilitate cultural exchanges, I can't help but help but ask myself the same question every year: have we successfully made substantial progress towards this ambitious vision?
I found myself without an answer to that question until I received a phone call a few days ago. It was this call that made me realize that all our hard work over the years has paid off.
On the other end of the phone was a European couple who share an enduring passion for Chinese work of art, especially that of Chinese antiques. They began their journey of collecting years ago but also their enthusiasm for collecting. Following the setback, the couple decided to keep their distance from collecting to prevent a greater loss, even when they saw desirable items that would make a good addition to their collection.
When the couple was in Hong Kong, they stumbled upon the International Antiques Fair, where they met a group of art aficionados and participated in a series of events such as guided tours, lectures and free antique appraisals. It was through the fair that the couple reignited their passion for collecting and continue to pursue their lifelong career as collectors, except this time with stronger confidence.
Since then, they have been sending me messages sharing their latest acquisitions and the joy of collecting. A few days ago, they have me a call and told me their excitement about IAF this year. They also made plans to come and meet up with me during the fair. They wrapped up the conversation with two simple yet powerful words: Thank you!.
I have always been fascinated by these heartwarming stories. It is interesting how individuals in the art world are connected because of similar stories like these that resonate with many of us. Every story that takes place during the fair is a testimony to our collective effort.
I hope the 12th International Antiques Fair will continue to inspire and create more amazing antique stories for many years to come.
